Fireplace Feature Wall Planning Guide for Toronto Homeowners
A fireplace feature wall combines several systems in one focal point: the fireplace, television, finished surface, storage, lighting and electrical work. Good planning is essential because changing one component can affect every other dimension.
Confirm the Fireplace First
Choose whether the fireplace will be electric or gas before the wall is framed. The manufacturer specifies clearances, venting, power requirements and the size of the opening. A long linear electric fireplace creates a modern look, while an existing gas unit may require specialized service and non-combustible materials.
Set the TV at a Comfortable Height
The television should not be pushed upward simply to fit a tall fireplace and mantel. Confirm the screen size, seating distance and viewing height. If the television will be recessed, leave space for ventilation, cables and future replacement.
Choose the Centre Finish
Large-format porcelain or natural stone provides a premium appearance but requires a suitable substrate and experienced installation. Marble-look PVC panels can produce a similar visual direction with less weight and cost. Painted MDF offers a clean architectural solution when stone is not required.
Add Storage and Lighting Carefully
Floating cabinets, side towers and open shelves should align with the overall wall proportions. LED lighting works best when channels, drivers and access points are planned before finishing. Pot lights and vertical LED lines should complement the design rather than create glare around the television.
Define the Scope
A clear quote should state who supplies the fireplace, tile or slab, television mount and cabinets. It should also identify demolition, framing, electrical, finishing, painting and debris removal. Electrical work should be completed by a licensed electrician.
